The secondary cell wall is a structure found mainly in plant cells located in between the primary cell wall and the plasma membrane. The cell starts producing the secondary cell wall after the primary cell wall is complete and the cell has stopped expanding, secondary cell wall formed inner side to cell, i.e., towards membrane.

Secondary cell wall provides additional protection to the cell, rigidity as well as protection to larger plants. These walls are constructed of layered sheaths of cellulose microfibrils whereas the fibres are in parallel arrangement. The inclusion of lignin makes secondary cell wall less flexible and less permeable to water. In addition to making the cell wall more resistant to degradation the hydrophobic nature of lignin within these tissues is required for containing water within the vascular tissues that carry it throughout the plant.

The secondary cell wall is primarily made up of cellulose along with the polysaccharides, lignin and glycoproteins. It sometimes consists of 3 distinct layers S1, S2, S3. Some secondary cell wall functions to store nutrients as in cotyledons and endosperms.
