Explain the underground stem.

A stem develops from the plumule of the embryo. It is the ascending part of the plant axis. It is negatively geotropic. But they modify some stems to various forms and remain underground. These are called underground stem modification.

These are the following types:

Rhizome:- The underground stems grow horizontally. It is fleshy and perennial. Rhizome possesses nodes and internodes. Nodes bear axillary buds. Examples:- Banana, Ginger, etc.
Tuber:- Here lower branches are positively geotropic and get buried in the soil. The starch gets accumulated there. So they swelled up and become spherical. On the nodes, there are buds called eyes. The reserve food is starch. Examples:- Potatoes.

Bulb:- Here internodes are highly condensed and become bulb-like. Leaves are fleshy, storing food. Roots are produced from the base of the bulb. Examples- Onion, Garlic, etc.

Corm:- It is a short, thick and highly condensed form of the rhizome. The corms bear buds at internodes and adventitious roots at the base, Examples- Amorphophallus, Alocasia, etc.
