Transformer works on AC only. Transformer works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. There are two types of transformers: step up and step down.

Step up transformer Step down transformer

A step up transformer is the transformer used to change a low alternative voltage to a high alternating voltage. A step down transformer is the transformer used to change a high alternative voltage to a low alternating voltage.

The number of turns in the secondary coil is more than the number of turns in the primary coil in a step up transformer. The number of turns in the primary coil is more than the number of turns in the secondary coil in a step up transformer.

A transformer will not work with direct current.

The equations connecting voltage, number of turns and current is given below.

$\frac{N_{p}}{N_{s}} = \frac{V_{p}}{V_{s}} = \frac{I_{p}}{I_{s}}$ .

Where, $N_{p}$ number of primary turns, $N_{s}$ number of secondary turns, $V_{p}$ primary voltage, $V_{s}$ secondary voltage, $I_{p}$ primary current and $I_{s}$ secondary current.
