Explain why

(a) a heavy truck is fitted with six to fourteen tyres,

(b) skiers use long flat skis to slide over snow,

(c) foundations of high-rise buildings are kept wide.

Accepted Answer

(a) Vehicles which carry heavy machinery will put more pressure on tyres as pressure is inversely proportional to area. To reduce the pressure on the tyres, more tyres are used, increasing the area of contact and reducing the pressure. Hence, vehicles which carry heavy machinery are equipped with a number of tyres.

(b) The pressure is inversely proportional to the area of cross-section when the force applied is constant. The long flat skis will help the skiers to apply lower pressure on the snow by increasing the area of contact. This will help them not sink into the snow.

(c) High rise buildings are massive structures which exert tremendous pressure on the ground and are likely to sink. So to avoid sinking, their foundations are made wide, to decrease the pressure on the ground. As we know that same force acting on a smaller area exerts a larger pressure but smaller pressure on larger area.
