Two men start from points A and B respectively, 50 k m apart. One walks from A to B at x k m / h r and another walks from B to A at y k m / h r . They meet each other after 5 hours. Write a linear equation for this information and draw its graph.

Here, in the question, the speed of walking of first man in km / hr is represented by x and for the second man is represented by y . Let the distance walked by the first man after 5 hours is 5 × x = 5 x . Similarly the distance walked by second man in the same time is 5 × y = 5 y . As the two men meet after 5 hours, the total distance walked by both of them is equal to the distance between A & B . 5 x + 5 y = 50 ⇒ 5 x + y = 50 ⇒ x + y = 50 5 = 10 So the required equation is x + y = 10 . For x = 0 , y = 10 - x = 10 - 0 = 10 . So one point on the equation of the line is 0 , 10 . Similarly for y = 0 , x = 10 - y = 10 - 0 = 10 . So another point on the given line is 10 , 0 .
