The IUPAC rules for the naming of covalent compounds are given below-

● For a single atom in the first position, never use the numerical multiplier “mono-”. Only use the name of the element.

● For multiple atoms in the first position, use a numerical multiplier in the prefix position before the name of the element.

● For single or multiple atoms in the second position, use a numerical multiplier in the prefix position before the name of the element.

● The suffix of the element in the second position changes to “-ide”. For example, chlorine becomes chloride. This is the same as in ionic compounds. When two vowels come together, one vowel is deleted—it is monoxide not mono-oxide.
