During gametogenesis, certain cells from the germinal epithelium of the gonads divide and differentiate into the male and female gametes. The process of formation of male gametes is called spermatogenesis and the process of formation of female gametes is called oogenesis.

The germ cells of ovary divide by mitotic divisions and differentiate to form oogonial cells or the egg mother cells. These cells divide again mitotically and grow to form the primary oocytes. All these cells are diploid in nature. The primary oocytes then divide by meiosis and form the secondary oocyte and one polar body after the completion of first meiotic division. These cells carry only half the number of chromosomes thus, are haploid. The secondary oocyte complete the meiosis and form one polar body and one ootid. The first polar body also divides into two polar bodies. Thus, by the end of meiosis one ootid and three polar bodies are formed. The ootid then differentiates into a mature ovum.
