On the basis of exhaustibility, resources can be classified into two groups:

i) Renewable or inexhaustible resources and ii) Non-renewable or exhaustible resources.

i) Renewable Resources: This type of resource can be used repeatedly, and they are replenished time and again by the natural process. As there is a continuous supply of these resources, they are called flow resources. With the advancement of science and technology, these resources can be used more efficiently. Power can also be produced from them. Sunlight and wind energy are examples of these types of resources. Renewable resources can temporarily be diminished with use but are renewed with proper management.

ii) Non-renewable Resources: The stock of exhaustible resources decrease and gradually disappears with time. They can not be replenished. That is why they are called non-renewable or exhaustible resources. Abiotic resources like coal, petroleum are examples of non-renewable resources. They take millions of years for their formation. Once they are exhausted, they get destroyed.
