The theory of spontaneous generation was given by the Greek philosopher Aristotle. He stated that living organisms originate from nonliving material. The theory of spontaneous generation is also known as abiogenesis.

Louis Pasteur created a system to examine whether sterilized nutrient broth could spontaneously produce the life of microorganisms. He set up two experiments. Pasteur took two flasks and added nutrient broth into them. Then he twisted the necks of the flasks into S shapes and then to kill any existing microorganisms in the flask, he boiled the broth. This was one of the most famous experiments.

Louis Pasteur disproved the theory of spontaneous generation. His experiment revealed that microorganisms cannot originate from nonliving matters if conditions of the primitive Earth is provided. He invented the swan-necked flask to create that environment. He illustrated that life begins only from pre-existing life and supported biogenesis. But his experiments failed to confirm that spontaneous generation never happened.
