How does fossilization occur in plants?

Fossilization is a process of formation of fossils in the rocks by some common methods like petrifaction, molds and cast, carbonization, preservation, compression, and infiltration.

1) Petrifaction- Minerals penetrate slowly in the original organic tissue and replaces it with a rock-like fossil. In this method of fossilization, the hard and soft parts like bones and wood are petrified.

2) Mold and Cast- When an organism gets buried in the sediment it gets decomposed due to underground water and creates a hollow space which is called mold. This mold or hollow depression is then get filled by the minerals which form a cast.

3) Preservation- Ice or tree sap acts as a natural preservative that protects the organisms from decay.

4) Compression- When an organism dies its body settles at the bottom of the sea bed and is covered by sediment. This process forms the fossils.

5) Infiltration or Replacement- Hard parts like bone, wood, stem, etc of plants and animals and are dissolved and replaced by these minerals.
