Human eyes work just like a camera. If our eyes look at an object, its sensation remains in front of our eyes for ${\frac{1}{16}}^{th}$ of a second. This phenomenon is called the persistence of vision. We might have made flip books in our art class. It is made up of a sequence of images and on flipping it rapidly, the object in the flip book seems to be in motion. If an image is formed on the retina in this time duration, then the eye cannot distinguish between the old and the new image.

Animation works on the same internal phenomena of the persistence of vision. Illustrations are made on pages, called frames. Each frame is flashed on the screen for a very short period of time and replaced by the next sequence of frames. Due to the persistence of vision, our eyes create an optical illusion that seems as if the object is moving.
