A genome is defined as the complete haploid set of all the genes prese nt in the chromosomes of an individual. The complete genome of humans was studied under the human genome project started in 1990. This project was launched by the US Department of Energy and the National Institute of Health on October 1, 1990. It was found in this project that the human genome has more than three billion ( 3 × 10 9 ) base pairs present in thirty thousand (30,000) genes and each gene on average has three thousand 3000 base pairs. A maximum number of genes (2968) are present in the first chromosome and a minimum number of genes (231) are present in the Y-chromosome.
