The hypothalamus is an endocrine gland that is located above the pituitary gland beneath the brain. It releases the releasing hormones and the inhibitory hormones that control the stimulation of the pituitary gland. The master endocrine gland is controlled by the hypothalamus.

The action of releasing hormones- The releasing hormones of hypothalamus like Corticotropin-releasing hormone, Thyroid-stimulating hormone-releasing hormone etc., stimulates the release of the Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and Thyroid stimulating hormones (TSH) respectively from the anterior lobe of the pituitary.

The action of inhibitory hormones- These hormones like prolactin-inhibitory hormone and growth hormone-Inhibitory hormone inhibits the release of prolactin hormone and growth hormone from the pituitary gland thus inhibiting the production of milk and growth of the body, respectively.

Thus, the hypothalamus acts as a prime controller as it controls the secretions of the pituitary gland which in turn controls various other endocrine glands in the body.
