Air is a mixture of different gases. The air present in the atmosphere contains approximately $78 %$ of nitrogen, $21 %$ of oxygen, $0.03 %$ of carbon dioxide, inert gases, water vapours, and other impurities. These gases have many uses. Nitrogen is most abundant gas present in air. It is observed that a normal human being requires about $250 - 265 kg$ of air per day for doing various activities.

Uses of nitrogen are as follows:

1. Plants indirectly absorb nitrogen from the air for making proteins. Plants can only use nitrogen when it is in a soluble form in the soil.

2. Nitrogen is used in food packaging to prevent oxidation and to keep foods fresh.

3. In hospitals, liquid nitrogen is used to store and preserve human body tissues such as blood and the cornea of the eye. It is also used during skin grafting in patients suffering from burns.

4. Nitrogen is used in the manufacture of explosive such as dynamite, gunpowder and nitroglycerine.

5. Nitrogen is used in the production of nitrogenous compounds such as ammonia and nitric acid.
