Desert food chain: A desert food chain is a diagram showing the transfer of energy through an ecosystem in the desert. Desert plants such as cactus are the primary producer. A producer is a living organism that uses sunlight to make food for itself using a process called photosynthesis. Any living organism that does not make its own food is called a consumer. Animals that only eat producers are called primary consumers. Desert plant is eaten by insects such as desert locust. Rats feed on these insects for water and nutrition. Owls are predators that prey on rats.
