Kashi was a Mahajanapada during the sixth century BCE. It is currently a part of the contemporary Banaras district, which also comprises a portion of the Jaunpur, Ghazipur, and Mirzapur districts. The state with Banaras as its capital was referred to as Kashi. According to the Jataka and the Matsya Purana, the Brahmadatta family ruled Kashi Janapada between the seventh and sixth centuries BCE. Continual hostilities existed between Kashi Janapada and its neighbours, including Kosala Janapada. Later, Kamsa, the king of Kosala Baranasiggaho, also known as the seizer of Baranashi, seized Kashi.
