Preparation of $CO$ :
Carbon monoxide is prepared by gently heating commercial formic acid in a round bottom flask with an excess of concentrated sulfuric acid.

Preparation of ${CO}_{2}$ :
It can be prepared from ${CaCO}_{3}$ and $HCl$ as
$2 HCl + {CaCO}_{3} \to {CO}_{2} + {CaCl}_{2} + H_{2} O$

Properties of $CO$ Properties of ${CO}_{2}$

Colorless, odorless, tasteless, non-corrosive, highly poisonous gas of about the same density as that of air. At low concentrations the gas is odorless; however, at sufficiently-high concentrations, it has a sharp, acidic odor.

Very flammable, burning in air with bright blue flame. At standard temperature and pressure, the density of carbon dioxide is around about $1.67$ times that of air.

Uses of $CO$ Uses of ${CO}_{2}$

Metal Fabrication: Used in fuel gas mixtures with hydrogen and other gases for industrial and domestic heating. Used as an inert gas in chemical processes.

Chemicals: In the manufacture of a variety of chemicals such as acids, esters and alcohol. Used in the storage of carbon powder and in fire extinguishers.
