Take a potted plant of Coleus, Money plant or Croton having variegated leaves.

Keep it in perfect darkness for 2-3 days in order to destarch its leaves.

Place the potted plant in sunlight for 2 - 6 hours.

Pluck one variegated leaf and draw the outline of its green and non - green areas on the white paper.

Dip the leaf in boiling water for 5 - 10minutes with alcohol.

After 30 - 45 minutes, the leaf will become decolourised due to dissolution of chlorophyll. Soak the leaf in warm water to soften the leaf.

Keep the leaf in petridish and pour dilute iodine over it.

Observation:

Upon comparing the leaf with the sketched pattern on white paper we see that the green parts of the leaf containing chlorophyll show blue-black colour due to the presence of starch. This shows that photosynthesis has occurred in these parts.

The non-green parts of the leaf show a yellowish-brown colouration showing that they did not photosynthesize.
