Phloem is the complex permanent tissue present in the vascular plants that is a part of vascular or conducting tissue. It consists of the following elements:

Sieve tube: This tissue consists of tube-like cells called sieve tube that is responsible for the conduction of food materials like carbohydrates formed during photosynthesis.

Companion cells: These are specialised parenchyma cells that are elongated, having abundant granular cytoplasm and prominent nuclei.

Phloem fibres: These are also called bast fibres that are non-living, elongated, thick-walled, lignified cells with overlapping interlocked ends. These are sclerenchyma fibres associated with the complex tissue phloem.

Phloem parenchyma: The elongated vertical parenchyma cells other than companion cells, found lying associated with the sieve tube elements are called phloem parenchyma. These are elongated living parenchyma cells with the cellulose cell wall.
