ELEMENTS COMPOUNDS MIXTURES

These are pure substances made up of one kind of atoms. These are pure substances made up of two or more elements. These are impure substances made up of two or more compounds.

The atoms of one kind are present on their own. Components in a compound present in a definite ratio. Components in a mixture present in any proportions.

The elements have a definite set of properties. Elements are classified into metals, nonmetals and metalloids, each with its own properties. The compounds have a definite set of properties. Elements of compounds do not retain their original properties. The Mixture does not have a definite set of properties.

Elements occur on their own or as compounds and can not be separated by chemical and physical methods.

Example- metals like iron, sulphur, silver, gold, etc.

Elements in a compound are chemically combined and can be separated by chemical methods only.

Example- sodium chloride, ammonia, water, etc.

The components in a mixture are not chemically mixed and can be separated by physical methods only.

Example- a mixture of iron filings, sand and salt.
