Jyotiba Phule was a great thinker, social reformer, revolutionary in ideas, and writer from Maharashtra. He made the following contribution to the upliftment of untouchables:

a. Phule tried to eliminate the stigma of Hindu untouchability surrounding the lower castes by opening his house and allowing the members of the lower castes to use his water well.

b. He was assisted by his wife Savitri Bai Phule. They started the first school for girls in India in 1848.
c. He formed the Satya Shodhak Samaj, whose main aim was to liberate the Hindu Shudras and untouchables from exploitation and oppression.

d. He established a good library for the low caste and night schools for adults.
e. He initiated widow remarriage and started a home for upper-caste Hindu widows in 1854.
