From $1960 - 61$ to $2014 - 2015$ , the net sown area has reduced from $45.25 %$ to $43.40 %$ and the land under forests has increased from $18.11 %$ to $22.57 %$ . The reason is that the area under non-agricultural use has increased by about $2.95 %$ from $4.95 %$ in $1960 - 61$ to $7.92 %$ in $2002 - 03$ . This consists of buildings, roads, etc., because of increasing urbanisation. Also, current unplanted land has increased from $3.75 %$ to $7.03 %$ , causing a reduction in net sown area. It is disappointing to notice that in spite of massive efforts made by the government to extend forest cover, the area under other non-agricultural uses continues to be increasing.

It is probably due to deforestation, overgrazing, natural hazards, construction, etc., that the forest cover is still below the outline which was set in the National Forest Policy ( $1952$ ). The decline in barren and wasteland can be attributed to the increase in the area under non-agricultural use due to massive urbanisation and development of roads, railways, residential projects and canals, etc.
