${[Cr {({NH}_{3})}_{6}]}^{3 +}$ ion: In this complex. the oxidation number of $Cr = + 3$ . According to Hund's rule, the number of unpaired electrons in $3 d$ -subshell of ${}_{24}{Cr} [{}_{18}{Ar}] 3 d^{5} 4 s^{1}$ are 6 while in ${Cr}^{3 +}$ ion $[{}_{18}{Ar}] 3 d^{3} 4 s^{0}$ there are only three unpaired electrons. In order to accommodate six electron pairs donated by six ${NH}_{3}$ ligands, six vacant hybrid orbitals, $d^{2} {sp}^{3}$ (using inner $3 d$ - orbitals) must be made available. Experiments reveal that the complex has magnetic susceptibility corresponding to three unpaired electrons. This observation suggests the use of inner $3 d$ -orbitals. Thus, the complex has octahedral geometry and is called inner- orbital or spin—paired or low spin or hyperligated complex.

According to Valence Bond Theory (VBT):

$3 d 4 s 4 p Ni - atom ⥮ ⥮ ⥮ ↑ ↑ ⥮ Ni (II) ⥮ ⥮ ⥮ ↑ ↑ ⥮$

The complex will have square planar geometry if ${dsp}^{2}$ hybridization is involved. It will be possible if the metal contains one vacant $d$ -orbital for hybridization. This will be possible only if the two unpaired $d$ -electrons get paired up thereby making one of the $3 d$ -orbitals empty. Consequently, the complex would be diamagnetic due to the absence of unpaired electrons. Therefore, ${[Ni {(CN)}_{4}]}^{2 -}$ is ${dsp}^{2}$ hybridized and its geometry is square planar.
