A seed is a basic part of any plant. It is found inside a fruit which converts into a new plant when we plant it. They can be classified on the following basis - on the basis of number of cotyledons and on the basis of presence of endosperm. Cotyledon is the part of the embryo within the seed of a plant. It provides nutrition to the growing embryo. On the basis of number of cotyledons present, seeds are of two types - monocotyledonous seed and dicotyledonous seed.

Maize seed is monocotyledonous, i.e., it has only one cotyledon. It is endospermic seed. The bean seeds are dicotyledonous, i.e., it has two cotyledons. Within a seed, the radical develops into the root system and the plumule grows into the shoot system. It is non-endospermic seed.
