Detergents are the sodium salt of a long chain benzene sulphonic acid or the sodium salt of a long chain alkyl hydrogensulphate which has a strong cleansing property in water. The ionic group in detergent is - SO 3 - Na + or - SO 4 - Na + . They are also called 'soap-less soaps' because though they act like a soap, but they do not contain the usual 'soaps' like sodium stearate, etc.They can form lather easily even with hard water but are harmful to the environment because they are non-degradable. Example-Sodium n-dodecyl sulphate-

What is esterification ? Explain with chemical equation.

Esterification is a process in which an alcohol and a carboxylic acid reacts with each other in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid to form an ester. Therefore, the following chemical reaction will take place during esterification- CH 3 COOH Ethanoic acid + C 2 H 5 OH Ethanol → Conc . H 2 SO 4 CH 3 COOC 2 H 5 Ethyl ethanoate + H 2 O Water
