The figures given below show the two positions of resonance of a resonance tube. Sketch the vibration of the sound wave in each position. The depth of water level in the first position is 15 cm. What would be the depth of the second length of resonance?

We know that,

In a tube with one open end and one closed ended, $f_{1} = \frac{v}{4 L}$ .

So, for the first tube, $f = \frac{v}{4 l} = \frac{v}{4 \times 15} = \frac{v}{60} .$

For the second tube, $f_{2} = \frac{3 v}{4 l}$

We know that frequency will be equal for resonance.

Therefore,

$f_{1} = f_{2} \frac{v}{60} = \frac{3 v}{4 l} \frac{1}{60} = \frac{3}{4 l} 4 l = 3 \times 60 = 180 l = \frac{180}{4} l = 45 cm .$
