Formation of ammonium ion involves ammonia molecule and hydrogen ion. Ammonia contains one nitrogen atom and three hydrogen atoms. Nitrogen atom has five and hydrogen atom has one valence electron, respectively.

In ammonia, covalent bond formation takes place in which each of three hydrogen atoms are bonded to nitrogen atom by sharing a pair of electrons and one lone pair of electrons present on N-atom of ammonia after completing its octet.

The hydronium ion, involves water molecule and hydrogen ion. Water molecule contains two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Oxygen atom contains six valence electrons and hydrogen atom contains one valence electron.

The hydronium ions from water accepts lone pair of electrons of nitrogen atoms of ammonia molecule leading to formation of a coordinate bond (and hydronium ions acquired helium configuration)
