Definition : A unit which is independent of any other unit and from which the units of other quantities may be derived is called a fundamental unit.

We consider the units of length, mass and time as fundamental quantities because they are independent of each other, and all other units can be obtained by the combination of one or more of them.

To make measurements more scientific, convenient, coherent and uniform, the Eleventh General Conference of Weights and Measures in $1960$ accepted a new comprehensive and rationalized system of units, called the SI units. It is used in science and technology all over the world in a uniform pattern. In this system there are seven fundamental units. Length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, luminous intensity and amount of substance are the fundamental units.
