Substances whose induced dipole moment act in the direction of the electric field are called linear isotropic dielectrics.Linear isotropic dielectrics are those substances in which induced dipole moment are in the direction of the field and are proportional to field strength.

In linear isotropic dielectric, polarization of dielectric is parallel to the applied electric field, or we can say that polarization is directly dependent on the electric field.

Expression for linear isotropic dielectric in terms of electric field: Let, $ρ$ be the volume charge density. We can write it with free charges as well as bound charges as follows,

$ρ = ρ_{f} + ρ_{b} . . . . . . . . . . (i)$

Where, $ρ_{f}$ is volume charge density in case of free charges and $ρ_{b}$ is volume charge density in case of bound charges.

Equation $(i)$ can be rewritten as function of polarization,

$ρ = ρ_{f} + Δρ \dots . . (ii)$

Since, electric field is ratio of volume charge density to the permittivity of medium,

$ΔE = \frac{ρ}{ε_{\circ}}$

$ε_{\circ}$ is the permittivity of the medium.

We can write, equation $(ii)$

$ΔE = \frac{ρ_{f} + Δρ}{ε_{\circ}}$

This is the expression for a linear isotropic dielectric in terms of electric field.
