Joints are the places where two or more bones connect with each other. These joints facilitate the movement of the body. Joints are broadly classified into three types based on their movement, that are freely movable, immovable and slightly movable.

Different kinds of joints:

Immovable joints: Joints that do not allow any type of movement are immovable joints, these joints are also called fixed joints. The main function of these joints is to provide protection. Bones of the skull is an example.

Slightly movable joints: The bones of these joints have an outer covering of cartilage and allow it to move slightly. They are seen where flexible support is required in the body. For example, joints of the backbone.

Freely movable joints: Joints that allow free movement in one or more directions are freely movable joints. Their main functions is to allow the body to perform a variety of movements. For example ball and socket joint, pivot joint, etc.
