The Subsidiary Alliance was a policy employed by the British East India Company to expand its control over the Indian Princely States.

It was introduced by Lord Wellesley and was first used by Dupleix, the French Governor.

As per this policy, the Princely states had to relinquish their army and had to employ and maintain a British army in their territories.

In return for this, the British would provide them with security from any and all foreign and internal aggression.

The Princely states that entered into this also had no authority to enter into any foreign alliance or employ the officials of any other foreign power.

This policy greatly undermined the control of the Princely States.

Some of the Princely States that entered into this alliance were - Hyderabad, Mysore, Tanjore, Scindia, Awadh, and Gaekwad.
