Mesogamy is a form of fertilisation that can be found in all Cucurbit plants, including pumpkins, ridge gourds, bitter gourds, and other gourds. The pollen tube reaches the ovule through the middle or integuments of the ovule in this form of fertilisation.

Flowers are reproductive part of plant. Pollination occurs in chasmogamous flowers, which is a plant reproduction process. Open petals encircling exposed reproductive parts are typical in chasmogamous flowers. Chasmogamous is derived from the Greek word chasmogamous, which means "free union," and refers to the open arrangement of floral structures.

A modified cotyledon, or seed leaf, is assumed to be the scutellum. This seed leaf never develops into a green structure in grasses, and its sole purpose is to digest endosperm and deliver nutrients to the rest of the embryo. It functions to absorb nutrients from the endosperm during germination and is relatively thin with a large surface area.
