Oogenesis is a process of development of an ovum in the female ovaries.

Oogenesis can be divided into three phases:

Multiplication phase: The primordial germ cells are repeatedly divided by mitosis to form many diploid oogonia. This process completes in the embryo stage of a female.

Growth phase: In this process oogonia grow in size and form primary oocytes. The growth phase is the longest phase oogenesis (except humans). Oogonia is known as primary oocytes.

Maturation phase: Oogenesis takes place in the ovaries. Primary oocytes, begin the first steps of the first meiotic division, proceed up to diakinesis, and then stop any further development.

The oocytes grow and complete the meiosis I, forming a large secondary oocyte and a small polar body that receives a very little amount of cytoplasm but one full set of chromosomes.

Secondary oocytes come in oviduct by the process of ovulation. If sperm fertilises, it completes meiosis II and forms a mature ovum and the second polar body.

If it does not get fertilised, it gets released from the body during the menstrual cycle.
