Photosynthesis is a physicochemical process in which glucose is formed from CO₂ and water in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll. It is a photochemical, anabolic, oxido-reductive process by which green plants convert light energy into chemical energy to prepare carbohydrate as food material. In this process, the water is oxidised and carbon dioxide is reduced to form soluble glucose as the final product. Oxygen is the by-product that is evolved during photosynthesis.

The leaf is the chief organ of photosynthesis. The cells of mesophyll tissue of leaves located between the epidermis are the main tissue of photosynthesis. These cells possess abundant chlorophyll-containing organelles called chloroplasts. Chloroplast is the site of photosynthesis.
