The bony framework of the animal body that is supported by cartilages comprises the skeletal system. It is present inside the human body and is called an endoskeleton.

The various functions of the skeletal system are as follows:

Support: It provides support to various parts of the body. Vertebral column supports the trunk and the girdles support the limbs.

Protection: It protects the soft internal organs present in the body. The cranium protects the brain, Rib cage protects the heart and lungs.

Muscle attachment and movement of bones: The cartilage in the joints provide the site for the muscle attachment. The synovial joints allow the free movement of the bones and help in the movement and locomotion.

Formation of blood corpuscles: In the bone marrow the process of haemopoiesis takes place that results in the formation of different blood cells.

Breathing: The rib cage helps in the process of breathing as it lowers down and raises to facilitate inflation and deflation of the lungs.

Hearing: in the middle ear, three ear ossicles named as the malleus, incus and stapes are present these help in the process of hearing by transmitting the sound vibrations.
