Vegetative propagation is an asexual method of reproduction that occurs only in plants. In vegetative propagation, new plants are grown from the parts of the older plants without the help of any reproductive organs. There are the following methods of artificial vegetative propagation in plants-

Cutting-It involves the cutting of a small branch of a plant with leaf buds and placing it into the soil for growing a new plant. For example, rose and sugar cane.

Layering-It involves growing a plant from a branch that is pulled towards the ground and a part of it is covered with moist soil leaving the tip of the branch exposed above the ground. After some time, new roots develop from the part of the branch buried in the soil. The branch is then cut off from the parent plant and grows into a new plant. For example, jasmine and grapes.

Grafting-It involves growing a plant by joining the cut pieces of two different plants. The cut stem of the plant having roots is called stock. The cut stem of another plant without roots is called a scion. For example, banana and orange.
