Edward Jenner coined the term and vaccination for protective inoculation. He noticed that when all the people were getting infected with smallpox, milkmaids were protected against this disease. Jenner thought because of cowpox, a weaker version of illness from cows, milkmaids were protected. He proved that too by injecting the cowpox virus into the blood of a boy named James, who later got immunised of the smallpox virus. He used the Latin word for cow- Vacca, to describe the great new discovery and he coined the word vaccine.

How does Tuberculosis affect our body?

Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease. This infects mostly the lungs and some other parts of the body like lymph nodes, bones, kidneys, brain, spine and even the skin. This disease is caused by a bacterium named Mycobacterium tuberculosis. When an infected person sneezes or coughs, droplets coming out of the nose contains many bacteria which may enter a nearby healthy body through the nose and infect the lungs. These bacteria can travel from the lungs to other parts of the body through blood. Some symptoms are:- Coughing Coughing blood Weakness Weight loss Feeling sickness Night sweats fever

Salmonella typhi is a pathogenic bacterium that causes typhoid fever in human beings. These pathogens generally enter the small intestine through food and water contaminated with them and migrate to other organs through blood. Sustained high fever (39° to 40 °C), weakness, stomach pain, constipation, headache and loss of appetite are some common symptoms of this disease. Intestinal perforation and death may occur in severe cases. Typhoid fever could be confirmed by the Widal test. Widal test: A classic case in medicine, that of Mary Mallon nicknamed Typhoid Mary, is worth mentioning here. She was a cook by profession and was a typhoid carrier who continued to spread typhoid for several years through the food she prepared. Typhoid Fever Causes Typhoid fever is caused by the virulent bacteria known as Salmonella typhi . Although they are related to Salmonella typhi. The bacteria are responsible for salmonellosis , yet different serious intestinal infections, are not identical. Mode of transmission: The transmission Typhoid is mainly transmitted through the faecal-oral route . The causative bacteria are carried in the excretions and the urine of infected people, which may contaminate the food, water or drinks and cause the infection in those who have consumed the contaminated things. Symptoms: Headache Muscle aches Weakness and fatigue Sweating Loss of appetite and weight loss Abdominal pain Dry cough Diarrhoea or constipation Rash Treatment: Typhoid fever requires prompt treatment along with antibiotics. If typhoid fever is diagnosed first, the infection is likely to be quite moderate. It can be usually treated at the home itself with a 7 to 14-day course of antibiotic medicines. More serious cases of typhoid fever generally need access to the hospital so that antibiotic injections can be given.
