Why did Gandhiji withdraw the non-cooperation movement?

The non-cooperation movement was launched by Gandhiji in $1920$ in wake of the horrific Jallianwala Bagh massacre and to make the Indians revoke their cooperation with the British government. This was a peaceful movement in which Gandhiji called for a boycott of British goods and government institutions while promoting goods made from Khadi. The movement continued till $1922$ when it was suspended by Gandhiji due to the Chauri-Chaura incident that took place in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. In this incident, a violent mob of peasants had brunt down a police station with $22$ people inside. This made Gandhiji withdraw the non-cooperation movement that was aimed to be a non-violent movement. Many leaders such as Motilal Nehru, CR Das, and Rabindranath Tagore criticized this move of Gandhiji to suspend the movement. Despite being suspended, this movement was the first movement for Independence in which a very large mass participated.
