Fertilization is the process of fusion of male and female gametes that have been formed in the testes of the male and ovaries of females, respectively, by the process of meiotic division in germ cells. The fertilization takes place in the fallopian tube of oviduct after which the diploid structure zygote is formed. The ova are formed inside the ovary and are released into the fallopian tube only once during the menstrual cycle at the time of ovulation. Fertilization is possible only once in a month as it requires both the egg and sperm that fuses to form the zygote during fertilization.

The sperms are deposited at the top of the vagina close to the cervix of the uterus by the male during ejaculation. The sperms are highly active and mobile. They travel upwards and reach the oviduct where any one of the sperms encounter the egg to form a zygote.
