Stomata are tiny openings present on the epidermis of leaves. It allows carbon dioxide and water to enter and expel out during the process of photosynthesis. It is surrounded by two kidney-shaped structures called guard cells, which regulate the opening and closing of stomata. The opening and closing depend upon the turgor pressure in the guard cells. During the day, water from the neighbouring cells enters the guard cells. This causes the outer thin wall of the guard cells to bulge out, pulling the thick inner wall down, thereby opening the stomata (fig a).

During the night, the water from the guard cells moves out into the adjoining cells. This causes flaccidity and shrinkage of the thick inner walls of guard cells. As a result, the stomatal pores close (fig b).
