Plants prepare their own food by using inorganic components in the presence of sunlight in a process known as photosynthesis. Plant cells contain plastids, which are absent in animal cells. These plastids are double-membraned cell organelles that play an important role in food production and storage. Chloroplasts are one type of plastid. All green plants and algae include chloroplasts. These are found in mesophyll cells found in plant leaves. They have a high quantity of chlorophyll, which absorbs sunlight. The structure of chloroplasts is described below:

Each chloroplast is surrounded by two membranes called the outer and inner membrane. Inside the chloroplast is the stroma, a ground matter or homogeneous matrix that contains enzymes, DNA, ribosomes, and other substances. There are stacks of interconnected membranous sacs called grana (X). Chlorophyll molecules are found on the surface of each membranous sac.
