The cell is the structural and functional unit of life. The general parts of both plant and animal cells are as follows :

Cell membrane : The cell membrane is defined as the outermost semipermeable covering of a cell that protects the cell organelles.The cell wall lies external to the cell membrane in the cells of plants, fungi and bacteria. Cell wall is absent in animal cells.

Golgi apparatus: It is composed of sacs arranged in stacks. It packs and transport fats and proteins.

Endoplasmic reticulum: It synthesises, stores, and transmits cell products. Ribosomes are small beaded structures distributed in the cytoplasm or on the surface of the endoplasmic reticulum. They are responsible for protein synthesis.

Mitochondria: are double-membrane bound organelles that provide energy to the cells by the process of respiration.

The vacuoles: are membrane-bound organelles that help in the storage of food and water. Present in plant cells and small traces in animal cells.

Lysosomes: are the organelles that contain enzymes that help in intracellular digestion.
