Parenchyma is a primary, simple permanent tissue of the plants consisting of thin-walled cells. The cells of this tissue are living and more or less isodiametric in shape with intercellular spaces. The cell wall is usually thin and composed of cellulose.

Different types of parenchyma are present in plants:

Prosenchyma: Prosenchyma is long and tapering parenchymatous cell present in some plants.

Example: Pericycle

Aerenchyma: Aerenchyma is a type of parenchyma cell having large intercellular air space. Example: cortex of hydrophytes.

Chlorenchyma: Chlorenchyma is a parenchyma cell containing chloroplasts. Example: mesophyll tissue that helps in photosynthesis.

The Function of parenchyma tissue:

Photosynthesis: Chlorenchyma contains chloroplast which helps in photosynthesis.

Storage: Parenchyma cells store food in the form of proteins, starch, oils and fats.

The presence of aerenchyma tissue make the aquatic plants light and bouyant.

Secretion: A special parenchyma cell calle idioblastic cell secretes resins, latex, tannin, oils etc.

Transport: Xylem and phloem parenchyma helps in transport of nutrients and water.

Mechanical support: Prosenchyma tissue is meantfor providing rigidity and strength.
