Alternation of generation in Algae: In sexually reproducing algae, three types of life cycles may be observed, which are as follows:

Haplontic Life Cycle: Diplontic Life Cycle: Haplo- Diplontic Life Cycle: Haplobiontic Life Cycle: Haplo-diplontic Life Cycle.
(i) Haploblontic, Haplontic or Monogenetic life cycle- Here, the haploid phase is predominant, and the diploid phase is short, restricted to the diploid zygote. The haploid phase is restricted to gametes only. The zygote develops into a diploid individual without undergoing meiosis. Reduction division or meiosis takes place during the formation of gametes.
(ii) Diplontic life cycle- Here, the plants are diploid. The haploid phase is restricted only to gametes. The diploid phase is predominant.
(iii) Diplobiontic life cycle, Digenetic or Haplodiplontic life cycle- Zygote (2n) develops into a diploid individual without meiosis. Through meiosis, haploid asexual reproductive cells are produced from diploid individuals. From these cells, haploid sexual individuals are produced, which afterward produce gametes (n). The gametes unite to form zygote (2n). Both haploid and diploid phases are predominant.
