Characteristics of physical changes are:

1. When a substance undergoes a physical change, no new products are formed. For example, in the melting of ice, water is formed but property and composition of the water remain the same.

2. When a substance undergoes a physical change, only physical properties of the substance is changed. For example, if we tear a paper, the size of the paper is reduced but the property of the piece of paper remains the same as that of paper.

3. Physical changes are temporary and it can be reversed by simple physical method.

Characteristics of chemical changes are:

1. When a substance undergoes a chemical change, reactant loses its original composition and property and produces new products with entirely different composition and property. For example, in rusting of iron, the composition and property of rust are entirely different from that of iron.

2. A chemical change is a permanent change. It cannot be reversed by reversing condition or by simple physical method. For example, we cannot get back milk from curd.

3. During a chemical reaction, energy is released or absorbed in the form of heat. If a chemical reaction takes place with the release of heat, it is called an exothermic reaction. If the reaction takes place with the absorption of heat, then it is called an endothermic reaction.
