Important Points to Remember in Chapter -1 - Vital Statistics And Official Statistics from Tamil Nadu Board Statistics Standard 12 Solutions

1. Vital Statistics:

It is a branch of Demography, which is the science applied to the analysis and interpretation of numerical facts regarding vital events.

2. Collection of data vital events:

(i) Civil Registration System:

Civil Registration System is the most common method of collecting information on vital events.

(ii) Census or Complete Enumeration method:

Census is conducted in most countries at intervals of ten years.

(iii) Survey method:

Survey records help to provide Vital Statistics for that region only.

(iv) Sample Registration System:

Sample Registration System vital rates are required to monitor population growth.

(v) Analytical method:

Population estimates of any vital event at a given time can be obtained without ad hoc surveys applying analytical methods.

3. Measurements of Mortality rate :

(i) Crude death rate=No.of live deaths in the popaulation during the given periodTotal number of persons in the population or community during the given period×1000

(ii) Specific Death Rate=No.of deaths in a specific section of the population during the given periodTotal number of persons in the population or community during the given period×1000

(iii) Infant Mortality Rate=No.of infant deaths in a population during the given periodNumber of live births in the population during the given period×1000

4. Cohort:

It is a group of individuals who born at the same time and experienced the same mortality conditions.

5. Life table:

A life table exhibits the number of persons living and dying at each age, on the basis of the experience of a cohort.

6. Methods of Fertility rates:

(i) Crude Birth Rate=No.of live births in the population during the given periodTotal no.of women at the reproductive age in the population during the given period×1000

(ii) General Fertility Rate=No.of live births occurred in the population during the given periodring the given periodTotal number of women at the reproductive age in the population during the given period×1000

(iii) Specific Fertility Rate=No. of live births to the women in the reproductive age of specific section in given periodTotal no. of women in the reproductive age groups of the specific section in given period×1000

7. Crude rate of natural increase:

Crude Rate of Natural Increase=(Crude Birth Rate-Crude DeathRate)

8. Pearl's vital index:

Pearle's vital index=crude birth ratecrude death rate×100

9. Official statistics:

The statistical information collected and compiled on various aspects including all major areas of citizen’s lives

10. National Sample Survey Office (NSSO):

(i) Survey Design and Research Division is responsible for technical planning of surveys, analysing and presenting survey results.

(ii) Field Operations Division is responsible for collection of primary data for the surveys undertaken by NSSO.

(iii) Data Processing Division is responsible for processing, validation and tabulation of the data collected through surveys.

(iv) Coordination and Publications Division is responsible for coordinating all the activities of different Divisions of NSSO.
