The photosynthesis process in plants involves the intake of carbon dioxide and the release of oxygen. The respiration process in plants involves the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide. There are no excretory organs present in plants, a transport system in plants that transports liquid cannot be used to transport gases. Gaseous exchange in plants takes place through leaves, stems.

Absorption of gases by leaves: The exchange of gases takes place through diffusion which is regulated by stomata. Stomata are tiny pores present in the epidermis of leaves. Opening and closing of stomata help in transpiration. Stomata open and close according to the turgidity of guard cells. These guard cells are bean-shaped and contain chloroplasts. When turgor pressure within guard cells increases they extend their inner walls and the stomata open.

Absorption of gases by roots and stems: The dead cork cells present in mature roots and woody stems contain suberin. Cork of these mature roots and woody stems contain non-suberized pores called lenticels which allow entry of oxygen to reach the intercellular spaces of interior tissues.
