Absorption is an important phenomenon in which plants obtain their nutrient requirements from roots. The root hairs are the initial sites for the absorption. Plants perform transportation through two different ways i.e. active and passive.

The process through which movement of the molecules takes place without the utilization of energy or ATP is called passive transportation.

The process through which movement of the molecules takes place through the utilization of energy or ATP is called active transportation. The movement of molecules in the active movement takes place against the concentration gradient in which, ATP molecule binds to the membrane proteins to provide the way of the ions.

During active transport, the membrane proteins use energy to pump molecules of matter across the cell membrane against concentration gradient. These proteins are sensitive to inhibitors reacting with protein side chain. Active transport through a carrier system is explained in the form of the diagram mentioned below.

The mechanism of path of water absorption by roots: The water absorbed by the root hair diffuses into cortical layers, endodermis, pericycle, and xylem vessels.
