A condensation (reaction) in which an enol or an enolate ion reacts with a carbonyl compound to form a $β -$ hydroxy aldehyde or $β -$ hydroxy ketone followed by dehydration to give a conjugated enone is known as aldol condensation.

From the base, the removal of $α -$ hydrogen takes place resulting in the formation of carbanion. Along with the carbonyl group present in the second molecule of the aldehyde, carbanion undergoes a nucleophilic addition which results in the formation of the condensation product. Due to the reaction with water occurrence of protonation of alkoxide ions takes place. Formation of $α - β ‐$ unsaturated aldehyde compound takes place on heating of the aldol compound in the basic solution.
