The Khilafat Movement

The Khilafat Movement was initiated by the Ali brothers -Mohammad Ali and Shaukat Ali - in protest in opposition to the injustices done to Turkey (which had fought against Britain) after the First World War. Turkey was crucial to the Indian Muslims as the Sultan of Turkey was also the 'Caliph' (or Khalifa) and was the head of the Muslims throughout the world. The Khilafat leaders put force on the British government to give finer treatment to Turkey.

The Pro-changers

The congressmen led by Motilal Nehru and C.R Das wanted to trial the elections and enter the legislature. They had the notion that national interest could be encouraged by working in the legislative councils under Dyarchy and the wreck of the colonial Government within.
They effectively used the legislature as a platform for the spread of nationalist ideas.

Purna Swaraj Resolution

In $1928$ , Congress announced a resolution demanding Dominion Status, that is, government by the Indians. It was a little less than whole independence. It was also announced that if Dominion Status was not given within a year, Congress would settle for nothing less than complete independence.

In December $1929$ , Congress held its annual assembly at Lahore. Jawaharlal Nehru was the president of this session. In it, Congress announced 'Purna Swaraj' (Complete Independence) as its ultimate goal. It asked all Congressmen and nationalists to resign from the legislatures and not to indulge in the forthcoming elections. It was decided that $26$ January would henceforth be said as 'Independence Day' every year. To achieve its demand, Congress decided to initiate another mass movement.
